Alex Snippets 13/10/08

Well, it all seems to be doom and gloom at the moment at the Alex, especially after another thumping away from home. Here’s a few opinions after the game.

Stand in captain Billy Jones spoke to the Super Alex website after the game “I was hurt because of some of the decisions I made and to captain the side and play like that wasn’t good enough. It was an honour to be asked to captain the team, but it was a very disappointing afternoon as we felt we were in the game at half-time and thought we could get back in contention.”

“We have got a belief in the squad and people may not believe that because of where we are in the league. But we have got to try putting the performances in for 90 minutes. Teams are looking forward to playing us at the moment and maybe we need to be more ruthless to get some points on the board.”

Meanwhile, assistant manager Neil Baker spoke to the clubs official site “We have scored one goal in the last four games and that is not good enough. It is nowhere near good enough. We have Pope doing fine and Calvin doing a job for the team but we will need more goals from them on a consistent basis. We also need goals from other departments as well because after Tom, our next leading scorer is Michael from midfield. The wingers haven’t chipped in with enough goals, Byron has one, the same as Joel and Shaun hasn’t scored in his couple of appearances.”

“We need a vast improvements in both penalty areas, because at the end of the day that is where is where football matches are ultimately decided. We know we have made too many mistakes at the back but we also need our attacking players and that doesn’t just mean the two forwards to contribute a lot more. The only way we are going to change things is by working even harder and not feel sorry for ourselves. When you actually go through the team, on their day and on top form they are all good players, but they are not producing it on a consistent basis enough.”

Despite all of the misery at Gresty Road, Colin Daniel and Josh Thompson played well for Halifax Town and Stafford Rangers respectively. Colin Daniel played some good attacking football in a game which saw two formers Alex players, Junior Brown and Cavell Coo grab goals as Halifax won 3-0. Thompson made his debut for rangers and played well but couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net and he saw the side eventually lose 4-1.
