Agyei Goal Cancels Out Former Player’s Opener

|

A goal from Dan Agyei would cancel out former Alex striker Scott Kashket’s opener as Crewe Alexandra were held to a home draw against Gillingham at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Manager Alex Morris made two changes from last Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Carlisle United as Rio Adebisi came in at left-back and Courtney Baker-Richardson started up front with Zac Williams dropping down to the bench and Lachlan Brook missing out on the matchday squad.

The visitors had the opening chance and goal of the game in the 12th minute as Will Wright’s corner was nodded down by Mandron for Kashket to backheel past goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo before the equaliser came 7 minutes later as Tariq Uwakwe would set up Agyei to curl the ball past Glenn Morris into the bottom corner from 25 yards out.

Baker-Richardson would have the next chance, heading an Uwakwe corner goalward with Morris making the save, before the break with Charlie Finney on for Adebisi not long after the break with Uwakwe moving back to left-back. Joel Tabiner would replace Bassala Sambou with 20 minutes to play with the youngster bright in his forward play with Eli King replaced by fellow loanee Khanya Leshabela about 10 minutes later. A late Tabiner cross was headed over by CBR with a point apiece the fair result on the day.

The next games for the Alex see us play Tranmere Rovers twice in a week, first an away league game on Friday night before a home EFL Trophy game the following Tuesday night.

What can we take out of this game?

It was another game that saw the Alex gain a point towards keeping ourselves in the Football League while being disappointed at not beating a side that was there for the taking (as we were if we’re honest).

It was inevitable that at least one of the two forwards were going to score against us yesterday, even if the Gills hadn’t scored many previously, seeing as Morris had mentioned it in his press conference ahead of the game (and our tendency of former players scoring against the club).
