Agents Rules Revolutionised

Football League clubs have voted to revolutionise agents’ rules. The main change concerns payments, with players now responsible for paying their own agents, rather than having their club pay for them.

The other main change concerns a change in laws regarding ‘dual representation’. Previously, an agent could represent both a club and a player in a transfer. However, the new laws prevent such a practice, hopefully ensuring a greater degree of honesty in transfer dealings.

Agents will also need a formal agreement to represent players and clubs, whilst club officials will also have disclose any interest or influences they have in an agent’s business.

The new laws are a step nearer to outlawing agents from the game. Players will doubtless be less keen to pay agents extortionate amounts of money for representing them in dealings, whereas previously this hadn’t concerned the players as most clubs would stump up the cash.
