Crewe Alexandra have snapped up young former Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Robbie Johnson on a two-year scholarship.

Johnson was released by the Premiership side in October of last year after progressing through their centre of excellence. A number of professional clubs wanted to take him on but Alex’s record with developing younger players convinced him of a future at Gresty Road.

He had most recently been appearing for North West Counties Premier League outfit Ashton Athletic and their youth development teams.

As a member of their North West Youth Alliance side, he helped the club to two cups and a non-league youth title.
