Danny Woodards will leave the Alex this summer after turning down a new contract. The former Exeter defender expressed his wishes to return to the south of England following two and a half years at Crewe.

The former Chelsea trainee had been stalling on the offer of a new contract all season and the Alex’s relegation is likely to have made his mind up following talks with Gudjon this week.

After joining from Exeter in January 2007 for a nominal feee Woody went on to make 94 appearances, playing an important role at right back. His steady performances impressed the Alex faithful but his lack of commitment saw him dropped last season in favour of the ever impressive John Brayford.

Woody becomes the second player to leave the Alex on his own will, with defender Julien Baudet choosing a move to America over a extra two years at Gresty Road. The news also comes following the release of Chris McCready, Stuart Tomlinson, Mark Carrington, Luke Danville and Josh Thompson yesterday.
