Goals from Cameron Evans and Matt Baker saw Newport County defeat Crewe Alexandra at Rodney Parade yesterday despite Adrien Thibaut coming off the bench for the Alex to score on his Football League debut.
Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from last Saturday’s 3-0 home win against Harrogate Town as Max Sanders came in for the injured Conor Thomas. Former Alex forward Courtney Baker-Richardson started for the hosts.
The opening chance came in the 5th minute as Max Conway’s cross evaded Kane Hemmings before Baker-Richardson headed a free-kick wide of Filip Marschall’s goal 6 minutes later. CBR would be denied by Alex skipper Mickey Demetriou with the defender making a challenge just after the half-hour before the hosts took the lead a couple of minutes later through right-back Cameron Evans, the defender smashing the ball into the top corner from 20 yards out after receiving the ball from Cameron Antwi’s square pass.
Jack Lankester would have an effort saved by Nick Townsend on the hour-mark before Hemmings would go off injured and be replaced by Thibaut a couple of minutes later. The substitute would have the ball in the net almost immediately but would score from an offside position from a Ryan Cooney cross before Bobby Kamwa hit the post on 71 minutes with a curling effort.
The equaliser came in the 73rd minute as Thibalt got on the end of another Cooney cross to score from close range before the hosts re-took the lead a minute later as Baker headed in Anthony Driscoll-Glennon’s cross at the back post.
The next games for the Alex see them host Gillingham next Saturday before hosting Harrogate Town the following Tuesday in the final EFL Trophy group stage game.
Final Thoughts:
That was a better performance than ones that we have seen recently but we need to be better closing down the ball in and around the penalty area – the first goal comes from standing off full-back Evans and allowing him the time to shoot before the second goal came from a throw-in that was taken short with the taker having the time to pick out a cross onto the head of his teammate.
