Here are those players that have worn the number 40 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Stephen Wright (Aug 99 – May 00)

The first player on the list is Wright who joined the club on loan from Liverpool for two spells in the 99/00 season, making 23 appearances for the club. He would also play for Sunderland, Stoke City, Coventry City, Brentford, Hartlepool United, Wrexham, Aberystwyth, Rhyl and Denbigh Town. He currently works as Under-18s manager with former club Wrexham, having been there since 2017.

Madjid Bougherra (Jan 06 – May 06)

Algerian defender Bougherra joined the club on loan from Gueugnon in January 2006, making 11 appearances for the club. He also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Rangers, Lekhwiya in Qatar, Fujairah in the UAE and Greek club Aris before retiring in the summer of 2016. He has since managed Al-Duhail’s Under-23s and former club Fujairah, who he departed by mutual consent in February this year.

Andy Taylor (Oct 06 – Nov 06)

Left-back Taylor was next to wear the number as he joined on loan from Blackburn Rovers, making 6 appearances in his month-long loan with the club. He would also play for Huddersfield Town, Tranmere Rovers, Sheffield United, Walsall, Blackpool and Oldham Athletic before joining current club AFC Fylde in October last year as a player and was appointed as a coach a couple of weeks ago.
