Here are those players that have worn the number 24 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Kevin Welsby (Jul 99 – Jun 01)

Goalkeeper Welsby is the first player on this list, having come through the Academy but didn’t make a first-team appearance.

Alan Navarro (Aug 01 – Sep 01)

Navarro joined the club for 2 loan spells from Liverpool either side of the summer of 2001, making 17 appearances for the club. He would also play on loan for Tranmere Rovers before making that move permanent and also played for Chester City, Macclesfield Town, Accrington Stanley, MK Dons, Brighton & Hove Albion and Swindon Town before retiring in the summer of 2014.

Gareth Whalley (Mar 02 – Apr 02)

Whalley rejoined the club on loan for the final 6 weeks of the 01/02 season from Bradford City, making 7 appearances in that spell (to go with over 200 appearances between 1992 and 1998 in his first spell). He would also play for Cardiff City, Wigan Athletic, Swindon Town and Altrincham before retiring from playing and has been coaching at Manchester City since 2014, where he is currently assistant of their Under-18 team.

James Robinson (Jul 02 – Jun 03)

We looked at Robinson’s career in the number 17 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

Matthew Platt (Jul 03 – Apr 05)

Striker Platt would graduate through the Academy system, making a solitary appearance for the first-team before leaving in April 2005 to join Icelandic side IBV. He would also play for Nantwich Town, Biddulph Victoria, Slough Town and Newcastle Town before retiring in the summer of 2010.

Mat Bailey (Jul 05 – Jun 07)

We looked at Bailey’s career in the number 20 column, he wore this number in his first two seasons with the club.

Nick Farquharson (Jul 07 – Jun 08)

Striker Farquharson is another that came through the Academy without making a league appearance for the club. We would have loan spells at Witton Albion, Northwich Victoria and Nantwich Town but was released in the summer of 2008.

Luke Murphy (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

We looked at Murphy’s career in the number 8 column, he wore this number in his first season with the first-team squad.

David Button (Jul 09 – Oct 09)

Goalkeeper Button joined the club on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2009 before going back to Spurs for a week or so then rejoining the club again at the end of the transfer window. He would make 10 appearances for the club across those 2 spells and would also play for Shrewsbury Town, Plymouth Argyle, Leyton Orient, Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley, Charlton Athletic, Brentford and Fulham before joining current club Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2018.

Bartek Fogler (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

Polish keeper Fogler joined the club from Swit Nowy Dwor Mazowiecki (thanks to Wiki for that one) in the summer of 2010 but wouldn’t make an appearance for the club in his only season. He would also play for Port Talbot Town, Bridgend Street and Wembley FC before joining PFC Victoria London in 2016.

Caspar Hughes (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

Midfielder Hughes came through the Academy, making 8 appearances for the club in his single season with him spending time on loan with Nantwich Town and Chasetown before signing with the Dabbers on his release from the Alex in the summer of 2012. He would also play for AFC Fylde before rejoining current club Nantwich in the summer of 2017.

Paris Bateman (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

Midfielder Bateman came through the Academy, without making a first-team appearance. He would also play for Stockport County and Toronto FC and would coach at the Alex at the Soccer Centre before joining current club Everton as a youth coach in the summer of 2017, he currently as their Under-13’s head coach.

Lee Molyneux (Jul 13 – Jun 14)

We looked at Molyneux’s career in the number 21 column, he wore the number in his first season with the club.

Greg Leigh (Aug 14 – Jun 15)

Left-back Leigh joined the club on loan from Manchester City in the summer of 2014, making 42 appearances for the club. He would join Bradford City at the end of that season (turning down a permanent move to the Alex) and would also play for Bury before joining current club NAC Breda in the summer of 2018, spending last season on loan at Aberdeen.

Harry Wilson (Aug 15 – Dec 15)

Winger Wilson joined the club on loan from Liverpool, making 7 appearances for the club before being recalled by Jurgen Klopp in December through lack of playing time. He would also play for Hull City and Derby County while he joined Bournemouth on loan for the season that’s just finishing.

Callum Cooke (Jan 17 – May 17)

Midfielder Cooke would join the club on loan from Middlesbrough, making 18 appearances for the club in the second half of that season. He would also play for Blackpool, Peterborough United and Bradford City and is now a free agent following his release from the Posh this summer.

Lewis Reilly (Jul 17 – Jun 20)

Striker Reilly came through the Academy, making 15 appearances in all competitions before being released this summer. He spent time away from the club at Halesowen Town, Curzon Ashton for 2 spells and Telford United before joining Chorley at the end of June.
