What’s In A Squad Number? – Number 19

Here are those players that have worn the number 19 shirt in competitive games since squad numbers were brought into the Football League in the 1999/2000 season.

Chris Lightfoot (Jul 99 – Jun 01)

The first player on the list is Lightfoot who joined the club from Wigan Athletic in March 1996 and made almost 100 appearances for the club before joining Morecambe in the summer of 2001. He would go on to play for Runcorn (as player/manager for his second season), Marine, Leek Town and Cefn Druids before retiring from football in 2005.

Geoff Thomas (Jul 01 – Jun 02)

Thomas rejoined the Alex for a second spell to finish a long career, signing for the Alex ahead of the 2001/02 season. He would make 17 appearances in that season (to go with the 138 appearances he made in his first spell) and has been fundraising for Leukemia Research (which he was diagnosed with having in Jun 2003) since 2005.

Ben Rix (Jul 02 – Jun 03)

We looked at Rix’s career in the number 12 column, he wore this number in his third season with the first-team squad.

Justin Cochrane (Jul 03 – Jun 04)

We looked at Cochrane’s career in the number 8 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

Michael Higdon (Jul 04 – Jun 06)

We looked at Higdon’s career in the number 10 column, he wore this number in his second and third seasons with the first-team squad.

Mark Roberts (Jul 06 – Jun 07)

Roberts came through the Alex academy system, making his debut for the club in September 2004 but would only make 7 appearances for the first team (while spending time on loan at Southport, Chester and Northwich Victoria) before joining the Vics permanently in January 2007. He would also play for Accrington Stanley, Stevenage (where he would also manage the club as caretaker manager on two occasions), Fleetwood Town, Cambridge United and Forest Green Rovers before joining current club Warrington Town in August 2018.

Shaun Miller (Jul 07 – Jun 08)

We looked at Miller’s career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his second season in his first spell at the club.

Tom Pope (Jul 08 – Jun 09)

We looked at Pope’s career in the number 15 column, he wore this number in his final season with the club.

Ashley Westwood (Jul 09 – Jun 10)

We looked at Westwood’s career in the number 4 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Kelvin Mellor (Jul 10 – Jun 11)

We looked at Mellor’s career in the number 3 column, he wore this number in his third season with the club.

Max Clayton (Jul 11 – Jun 12)

We looked at Clayton’s career in the number 7 column, he wore this number in his second season with the first-team squad.

Abdul Osman (Jul 12 – Jun 13)

We looked at Osman’s career in the number 8 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

Vadaine Oliver (Jul 13 – Jun 14)

We also looked at Oliver’s career in the number 9 column, he wore this number in his first season with the club.

James Baillie (Jul 14 – Jun 16)

Right-back Baillie is the penultimate player on this list, who made 18 appearances for the club before a loan move to Nantwich Town at the end of the 15/16 season. He joined current club Curzon Ashton in the summer of 2016, spending time at Abbey Hey and Mossley as he would look to return to fitness following a broken leg suffered in the 18/19 season.

Owen Dale (Jul 17 – present)

The current occupant of the number Dale has made over 50 appearances for the first team since his debut in August 2017. He’s another player who will be playing his first season as a third-tier player with him looking to establish himself as the first-choice right-winger at the club ahead of Daniel Powell.
