We Had Chances To Win

Gudjon says there were chances to win at Oldham yesterday and that he was never in doubt we’d get something from the game.

A below average performance from the Alex saw us trailing 1-0 at Boundary Park for much of the game yesterday. A header from Reuben Hazell just before half time gave Oldham the lead going into the second half and as time wore on it looked like it’d be the decider.

However with just a minute left on the clock Byron Moore broke clear of the Oldham defence to stroke home his fourth goal of the season, sending an already vocal Alex support mad.

For Gudjon the goal was inevitable. Speaking to the official site after the game he reckoned three points were there for the taking too;

‘Although they took the lead and we had wasted some good chances, I always thought we would get something from the game.

‘We have left it late again but my players are capable of that. We had good chances to be on the scoresheet before Byron scored. It was a well taken goal from him and that was our reward for a hard working performance.

‘Clayton missed a good chance in the first half, Zola should have hit the target from the free-kick and then Shaun Miller had a header at the back post as well, so there were chances there.’

Funnily enough Oldham boss Joe Royle had similar feelings about his own side’s performance. Having not yet won in his current stint as manager he admitted his frustration…

I’m frustrated because we should have scored more goals than we did. We scored a good goal through Reuben Hazell and then missed three or four good chances to go further ahead. Therein lies the problem – we can’t kill sides off.

‘There’s lots to be pleased with, but we still have problems at both ends. I know this – as a striker myself I know that if Neal Eardley has the ball at his feet I’m going to get in the box, but we don’t think goals.’
