Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis admitted his side struggled before earning a narrow 1-0 victory against Scunthorpe United at Gresty Road.

“We got lucky with the penalty, I thought it was dubious” – Steve Davis

Substitute AJ Leitch-Smith grabbed the only goal late on after skipper Luke Murphy’s penalty had been pushed onto the post by goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

“I thought we really struggled today, we dropped off the pace of the game. Neither side could impose themselves,” Davis told the Crewe Chronicle. “They had the better chances I have to say and had they have gone in the game would have changed dramatically. We were a bit lethargic, couldn’t really get any fluency in our play.

“We got lucky with the penalty, I thought it was dubious,” he admitted. “Maybe it has evened up against the two we got given against us last week but they will feel hard done by it was a harsh decision. Probably a draw would have been fair but we have nicked it and I am pleased with that.”
