We did it for Adam – Davis

Victorious Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis described his club’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final victory over Southend United at Wembley as a show of support for grieving defender Adam Dugdale.

“We’re a family. We’re that sort of club. We rally and get behind people” – Steve Davis

Dugdale suffered the tragic loss of his new born son only last week and both sets of supporters generously acclaimed the 25-year-old during the sixth minute of the game and just moments after Crewe had taken the lead.

Skipper Luke Murphy and striker Max Clayton were both on target in a 2-0 success for the Alex as they won the competition for the first time in their history.

“I’m sure the players put that little bit extra in for him. We’re a family. We’re that sort of club. We rally and get behind people,” Davis told BBC Sport. “Adam has not been into the club for a couple of weeks now. I phoned him on Saturday morning and he and Nicola were holding up as best as they could. I told him the players were behind him and they would try to do something for them.”
