Aston Villa are the latest top-flight club to make a move for Crewe Alexandra skipper Ashley Westwood.

The 22-year-old has already been heavily linked with Swansea City ahead of the close of the transfer window later this evening, while Everton are also believed to have shown an interest.

However, it is now Villa, under the new leadership of Paul Lambert, who would have appeared to have jumped right to the front of the queue.

But they would have to significantly improve on Swansea’s hugely optimistic opening bid of £500,000 should they want to complete a deal for the highly-rated schemer.

Crewe are understood to be demanding much closer to their £2m target for yet another player to have risen through one of the leading academies in the country.

  • How good is he lads? Heard the name, but don’t know a lot about him. Is he an attacking or defensive type player?
