Victory Against Promotion Rivals Sees Alex Into Top Three

|

Goals from Shilow Tracey and Ryan Cooney, the latter from the penalty spot, saw Crewe Alexandra move into the top three of League 2 following a victory against Notts County at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday despite finishing the game with 10 men.

Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Walsall as James Connolly came in for Jamie Knight-Lebel in the defence, the latter called up for international duty with Canada while Jack Lankester would also return to the bench following injury. Former Alex defender Rod McDonald was on the bench for the visitors while Scott Robertson was not involved.

The opening chance came in the 8th minute as Max Sanders had an effort saved by Alex Bass before the midfielder would smash the ball over 7 minutes later. The Alex would take the lead 4 minutes before the break as a County corner saw Joel Tabiner play the ball forward for Tracey to get on the end of, he’d beat Sam Austin for pace before nutmegging Bass from just inside the area.

The second half saw Marschall make a save early in the first half before the Alex would win a penalty on the hour-mark as Bogle was adjudged to have been brought down by Matthew Platt, Cooney stepped up to send Bass the wrong way from the spot. Marschall would make another save, this time to his right, as a cross from the left was headed goalwards on 72 minutes before Chris Long would return with 7 minutes to play though he would be shown a straight red card 90 seconds later for a high tackle

The next games for the Alex see them travel to Port Vale a week tomorrow before travelling to Carlisle United the following Saturday.

Final Thoughts:

It’s another positive result against a team that we are near in the table and one that we were the slightly better team (even if the possession was heavily in favour of the visitors).

Having seen it back (I couldn’t tell live due to the location of where I sit in the ground), it should never have been a penalty as it looked like Bogle had slipped in the area but, fortunately for the Alex and unfortunately for County, the only man whose opinion counts gave the spot kick.
