Championship new boys Barnsley have offered Steve Foster a two-year deal. The out-of-contract defender has made no secret of his desire to leave the club in order to find himself a better financial package elsewhere, and perhaps also Championship football. Barnsley’s offer would appear to meet both of those criteria, so it is likely that Foz will make the move to Oakwell within the next week.

Foster made 242 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals in the process at a ratio of one goal every 13 games. Foster was Crewe’s Players’ Player of the Season in 2003/04, but has endured an inconsistent spell since then. Foster’s form during the first two thirds of the season was largely unimpressive, though was punctuated by impressive displays such as the televised home game against Derby. Madjid Bougherra’s introduction to the first team saw a vast improvement in Foster’s form, and Barnsley will be hoping for a repeat of that form as they look to survive in the Championship.
