Three names currently head the list of potential new player-coaches for Crewe Alexandra.

“They are all players who are all capable of playing still” – Steve Davis

The Railwaymen require someone who
can seriously challenge youngster Ben Garratt for a starting place in the side following the recent departure of Steve Phillips.

Former Stoke City shot-stopper Steve Simonsen and ex-Birmingham City veteran Ian Bennett have both emerged as likely candidates. Simonsen, 35, is out-of-contract at Rangers while Bennett, 42, has been released by Huddersfield Town.

That pair join 33-year-old Scott Shearer as possible recruits following his departure from Rotherham United.

“They all fit in that bracket,” manager Steve Davis told the
Stoke Sentinel. “They are all players who have been number twos and number ones and they are all capable of playing still. I’ve had good reports from all of them.”

Davis also revealed he was considering Oldham Athletic’s Paul Rachubka before the 33-year-old American decided he was not yet ready for a dual role.
