Crewe Alexandra are considering trialist Luke Giverin as a possible replacement for departing skipper Luke Murphy.

“That’s the kind of player we’d have to bring in to get anywhere near Luke” – Steve Davis

The 20-year-old former Manchester United trainee has drawn himself comparisons with another former Alex captain, Ashley Westwood, during his first week of training.

However, Giverin already has a couple of serious offers to consider from top-flight Dutch football following a successful recent loan spell at Belgium side Royal Antwerp.

“It’s difficult for us searching for new players in competition with other teams if we were to try to bring in someone from League One or the Championship,” manager Steve Davis told This is Staffordshire. “That’s the kind of player we’d have to bring in to get anywhere near Luke.

“We haven’t got one coming through apart from maybe Billy Waters, who is a different player to Luke. We have to bring one in and we’ve spoken to a couple,” he continued. “And we’ve got Luke Giverin in on trial who is a ‘Westy’ type and shape. He’s got a great left foot and is good in dead-ball situations.”
