Thordarson Confirms Interest In Job

Former Stoke City manager Gudjon Thordarson has confirmed that he is interested in the manager’s job at Crewe.

Manager of Stoke between 1999 and 2002, the Icelandic won half of his 154 games as manager. He took Stoke in the Championship in 2002 before getting sacked prior to the new season.

He went on to have tough spells at Barnsley and Notts County before moving back to Iceland.

Thordarson though says that Crewe is a job he would like and has spoken to the club about the position. Speaking to BBC Radio Stoke, Thordarson said:

‘I’ve spoken to people at Crewe. I know what would be required, you need to coach the youngsters and have managerial skills as well. I think I’m equipped to do the job.

‘When I moved back to Iceland, I wasn’t considering returning to the English game,

‘Crewe is a good club that survives by making footballers. That is a good way to run a club and one reason why the job interests me.’

Thordarson is the first experience manager to confirm an interest in the job. He would certainly fit the experience and proven qualities that Chairman John Bowler requested but his ex-Stoke links and lack of ‘glamour’ around his name could rule him out in fans eyes.
