The Win Was Thoroughly Deserved

Carlisle boss John Ward is delighted as his side won their first game on the road since October, but Steve Holland feels the Alex should have got something from the game.

John Ward spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria after seeing Scott Dobie’s 65th minute winner bag all three points for Carlisle, and Ward was more than pleased.

He said: ‘I thought the win was thoroughly deserved, we’ve worked exceptionally hard tonight. Certainly I’ve said to you many times that the attitude of the team comes before ability and they have shown that tonight and shown some good ability too.

‘It was a good goal because our finishing had been wayward, in the first-half we had had a lot of the ball around the Crewe penalty box. Our shooting was not just over the bar but it was over the stand and it was all over the place. When that move came though it was good flowing football, it was a good ball across the box and you just fancied Scott Dobie to put it away. It was clean and clinical.’

Steve Holland was less praiseworthy for his own side. The Dutchman was less than happy as Byron Moore scuffed a glorious chance to put Crewe 1-0 up before half time.

Speaking to Radio Stoke and CreweAlex.net Holland said: ‘The chance for Byron, I think it was a knock back from a corner, he had two bites of the cherry and that needs to go in frankly.

‘In the second half we had a bit more of the play, without playing as well as we have done of late, but it was difficult out there it was blustery and the pitch was bumpy making it difficult to roll the ball like we’d like to. They did at times though I thought in the second half and probably had enough chances in the second half as well to get something.’
