Substitutes Stoppage-Time Goals See Alex Get Late Win

|

Stoppage-time goals from substitutes Omar Bogle and Jack Lankester saw Crewe Alexandra come from behind to defeat Carlisle United at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from Sunday’s 1-1 draw at MK Dons as Chris Long came into the team for Omar Bogle up front, the latter dropping down to the bench.

The first chance came in the opening minute as Shilow Tracey would play Long in to get a shot off that would be blocked before Tracey would also win a corner after having a shot blocked 4 minutes later. Jon Mellish would have the first effort for the visitors on 11 minutes, the forward having his effort saved by Filip Marschall before they would take the lead midway through the first half as Jack Ellis headed in a deep free-kick from Harrison Biggins, his effort was headed into the ground and looped over Marschall.

The Alex would be back level in the 32nd minute as a long ball from Matus Holicek fell into the path of Long as his shot was partially saved by Gabriel Breeze in the Cumbrians’ goal with the ball clipping the crossbar, bouncing down and crossing the goalline before the defender could get back to clear with the next chance coming 7 minutes from the break as Zac Williams’ long-range shot was turned around the post by Breeze.

Alex captain Mickey Demetriou would have the first effort of the second half as his header was saved by Breeze 9 minutes after the break before Carlisle would take the lead 11 minutes from time as substitute Kadeem Harris would play a 1-2 with Luke Armstrong with the sub slotting the ball past Marschall.

The Alex would be level in the second half of stoppage-time as a quickly taken corner between substitute Jack Powell and Lankester seeing the former’s cross headed in by Bogle at the back post before the winner came in the 8th minute of stoppage-time as Max Conway won the ball midway in the Carlisle half, beat a couple of men and play the ball wide to Holicek with his left-sided cross headed in by Lankester from just outside the 6-yard box.

The next games for the Alex see them hosting Bromley on Sunday before travelling to Swindon Town the following Saturday.

Final Thoughts:

That game felt like a ‘get out of jail’ result after a decent, organised away performance from Carlisle which saw them deserve a minimum of a point from the game.

Referee Simon Mather missed the handball just before the second goal (as did I but have seen it back since) with Bogle scoring from the resulting corner.
