Substitute Jamie Reid’s goal 11 minutes from time saw Stevenage complete a league double over Crewe Alexandra at Broadhall Way last night.
Manager Lee Bell named an unchanged team from Friday’s 4-3 home win against Salford City as Lachlan Brook replaced Regan Griffiths on the bench in the only change to the matchday squad.
The opening chance fell to the hosts in the 4th minute with James Beadle forced into an early save before on-loan Southampton midfielder Ryan Finnigan went off with an injury midway through the opening period, he was replaced by Conor Thomas.
Beadle would also make saves from Josh March twice in as many minutes before the deadlock was broken on 79 minutes with Reid firing a shot through the legs of Alex captain Luke Offord into the bottom corner of Beadle’s goal from the edge of the area giving the Alex keeper no chance. He would deny a chance for Reid with a couple of minutes to play with a point-blank save.
The next games for the Alex see them travelling to Northampton Town on Saturday before travelling to Gillingham next Tuesday.
What can we take out of this game?
It was another game that didn’t see the team have a shot on target, let alone trouble young goalkeeper Jon McCracken who was playing in his second Football League game.
We were noticeably weaker when Finnigan went off so hopefully, that isn’t going to keep him out for too long, seeing as he’s the best option we have in that midfield role.
