Striker AJ Leitch-Smith is out of Crewe Alexandra’s latest friendly with Huddersfield Town at Gresty Road tonight (kick-off 7.30pm).

The 22-year-old picked up a hairline fracture of his little toe in the 1-1 weekend draw against Bolton Wanderers. However, he should still recover in time to face Barnsley.

“It is one of those things that you can play on with if you have the bottle to do it, and you can put up with a little bit of pain and discomfort,” manager Steve Davis told This is Staffordshire. “That will be a test for him. Personally, it wouldn’t bother me too much, but you never know with one or two of the boys. We won’t risk him against Huddersfield, but he will be okay.”

His absence should at least give a chance to winger Michael West following his recent arrival from Conference side Ebbsfleet United.

As with Crewe, Huddersfield are also preparing for life at a higher level following a glorious Wembley triumph.

Midfielder Keith Southern, 31, is likely to earn himself a debut for the visitors after spending a decade with Blackpool.

But most eyes will probably be on prolific striker Jordan Rhodes, who scored an outstanding 40 goals last season.
