Striker On The Mark With Another Home Goal

|

Courtney Baker-Richardson’s 8th goal of the season was not enough for Crewe Alexandra to defeat Doncaster Rovers as the teams shared the points at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday.

Manager Alex Morris made three changes from Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat against Tranmere Rovers in the EFL Trophy as Arthur Okonkwo returned in goal with Kelvin Mellor and Tariq Uwakwe coming into the 5-man defence as Dave Richards and Charlie Finney dropped down to the bench with Rod McDonald missing out due to injury.

The hosts had the opening chance of the game in the 6th minute as Oli Finney would have an effort saved by Jonathan Mitchell before the keeper would save from Dan Agyei a couple of minutes later. The hosts would take the lead on 14 minutes as Uwakwe’s cross was headed in by CBR before Agyei would be denied by Mitchell 12 minutes later.

The visitors could have levelled just before the break following a handball from the goalscorer but George Miller’s penalty was saved by Okonkwo with the Donny forward heading the rebound over. The Alex could have doubled the lead after the break, first Agyei would have his effort saved before Joel Tabiner had an effort that was stopped by the Donny number 1. More good play from Agyei and Tabiner would see the youngster have another couple of efforts before the visitors would level with 13 minutes left to play, Miller firing the ball past Okonkwo into the bottom corner.

The next games for the Alex have two away trips in the next week, firstly at AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday before a trip to Barrow next Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

A better performance than in recent weeks but, annoyingly, not the three points that have alluded us in the last 5 weeks (the last win coming at home to Crawley last month).

Tabiner was the brightest spark on his first league start at home and the decision to substitute him with a quarter-hour to play made sense as he’s just establishing himself in the team, even if the team’s performance dipped after he went off.
