Stoppage-Time Winner Sees Alex Create History

|

A stoppage-time winner from substitute Amadou Bakayoko saw Bolton Wanderers defeat Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday, a result that saw the hosts lose seven straight home league games for the first time in their history.

Manager David Artell made one change to the starting 11 from Tuesday’s 2-0 home defeat against Wigan Athletic with midfielder Oli Finney coming into the team for defender Connor O’Riordan, who dropped down to the bench, as Travis Johnson would move into the back 3, Callum Ainley to left wing-back and Finney joining Rekeem Harper in playing off Chris Long.

The opening chance came in the 16th minute with a Tom Lowery cross that was fumbled by Wanderers keeper James Trafford (on loan from Manchester City) as his defence would clear it before Will Aimson would head a set-piece over the bar 8 minutes before the break.

Dave Richards made a great save to deny Afolayan’s header in the 49th minute before the forward would hit the post 4 minutes later. The first Alex effort at goal came in the 63rd minute with Long dragging a shot well wide from just outside the area after running with the ball from his own half before Richards would save from defender Ricardo Almeida Santos at the other end. The only Alex shot on target came on 79 minutes with Bassala Sambou lobbing the ball into the arms of Trafford but it would be the Trotters would get the win with a goal in the first minute of stoppage-time, a free-kick from Sadlier was saved by Richards with George Johnston’s low cross turned in by Bakayogo from close range.

Our next couple of games sees the Alex host Fleetwood Town on Saturday 2nd April before travelling to Doncaster Rovers the following Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

A club record for certain – never before have the Alex lost 7 league games in a row at home.

I’m also not sure whether it was a free-kick that led to the goal (although we had given a couple of free-kicks away a little further out than this one earlier in the game) but defenders have to react quicker after the save made by Richards.
