Crewe boss Dario Gradi has revealed that neighbours Stoke City were keen to buy Crewe’s Billy Jones during the January transfer window. The England Under 19 captain has refused to extend his stay at Crewe, despite the club’s promise to sell him, and has instead signalled his intent to see out his contract. However, as Jones is under 24, whoever signs Jones this summer must pay compensation.

It is believed that Stoke were willing to pay between £250k and 300k, though Crewe are reportedly looking for between £500k and £750k. Several Premiership outfits have been dubbed long term suitors of the youngster, though it will be interesting to see if a decent move actually materialises.
