Alex legend Geoff Thomas will be running the London Marathon next month and will be raising money for the Geoff Thomas Foundation.

Thomas was one of Dario Gradi’s many stars to leave Gresty Road and go on to make many appearances for the England national side. Geoff made over 120 appearances for the Alex in his first spell between 1984/87 having signed on a free from Rochdale, who didn’t feel he was good enough.

After going on to captain Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, making nine appearances for England and also notching up appearances for the likes of Wolves, Forest and Barnsley; Thomas returned to Crewe for a final season in 2001-2002, a season which was unfortunately cut short through injury.

Only a year after retiring from the game Thomas was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in June 2003. After a bone marrow transplant in January 2004, Geoff is in remission and continues to raise money for Leukemia Research and the Geoff Thomas Foundation.

In 2005 Geoff raised over £170,000 for Leukemia Research after cycling the 21 day Tour De France route, totaling over 2,200 miles and went on to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award. He cycled the route again in 2007 for the Geoff Thomas Foundation.

This year Geoff is looking to raise funds for the Geoff Thomas Foundation as he runs the London Marathon on April 13th. He will be running the 26 mile route with his wife Julie and some friends.

Geoff is asking for any runners who will be running to sign up and support the Geoff Thomas Foundation.

He told the GTF website: ”We are hoping to encourage keen participants to sign up with the Geoff Thomas Foundation to help us drive fundraising and bring more money to medical research into cancer and cancer treatments.”
