Crewe Alexandra suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic in their penultimate away game of the campaign.

Striker Jonathan Forte scored the only goal of the contest just before the hour to ensure his side remain at this level for next season.

Marcus Haber had already twice threatened for the visitors when forcing goalkeeper Joel Coleman into action.

Callum Saunders also had a chance after seizing upon a defensive mistake just prior to the interval but once again couldn’t beat the keeper.

Opposite number Ben Garratt then blocked from Curtis Main before Forte despatched Tim Dieng’s cross into the net via both uprights for what proved to be the winner.

Substitute Brad Inman was close to an equaliser when his curling effort was turned away from his top corner by Coleman.

Leading goalscorer Inman later sent another attempt wide, while Garratt thwarted home substitute Dominic Poleon.
