Crewe Alexandra suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to League One newcomers Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.
Michael Jacobs scored the decisive early winner when heading in Max Power’s twelfth-minute corner.
However, Brad Inman immediately struck the woodwork at the other end, while home forward Will Grigg also headed onto an upright.
Northern Ireland striker Grigg earlier turned a Reece James cross towards Ben Garratt, whose opposite number Richard O’Donnell was forced into a low stop from Ollie Turton on the edge of the area.
The Latics soon moved in front through the unmarked Jacobs heading in, although Inman instantly crashed a reply against the inside of a post.
It then required Garratt to block at the feet of goalscorer Jacobs before the young keeper was also tested by both Jonjoe Kenny and Jacobs again.
Crewe debutant Stephen Kingsley next called O’Donnell into making an acrobatic stop, while Garratt thwarted Jacobs once more following the break.
When Garratt was beaten a second time an upright was enough to frustrate Grigg, with substitute Lauri Dalla Valle later heading Inman’s cross wide at the opposite end.
