Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis expects to complete his first signing of the summer within the next few days.

The Alex boss has already held talks with an unnamed centre-back and negotiations are at an “advanced” stage – to such an extent a deal should be wrapped up later this week.

“We are close to bringing in a centre-half and the talks are at an advanced stage,” Davis confirmed to Alex’s official website. “I will be speaking again with the chairman today to see if we can tie one or two things up. I have spoken to the players’ agent and the player wants to come here. We are virtually there with personal terms.”

Alex have already missed out on ex-Swindon Town left-back Callum Kennedy after he elected to join Scunthorpe United and are also strongly linked with Torquay United’s Mark Ellis.
