As Gudjon Thordarson looks to steer Crewe to league one safety, who exactly does he need to bring in to produce the performances on the pitch and put points on the board to avoid dropping into the basement league of English football

Keeper?

Having had 3 or 4 goalkeeping errors since his arrival, Thordason has already stated he could look to strengthen the department and has already been given the green light to bring in a Goalkeeping coach. The Alex have already been linked with 3 new faces, 3rd choice Hull keeper Tony Warner, a vastly and much travelled player and the colorful character of Crystal palace stopper Gabor Kiraly, although he looks set to seal a move to the SPL. The more likely option is the Icelandic second division keeper Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson of HK Kópavogur who has 5 international caps and has set to have been offered a deal by the club.

Left Back?

It has not been publicly stated by the club, but many Alex fans will be looking towards a new left back being brought in to try to help stop the dreadful goals against tally the club have clocked up this season. Billy Jones undoubtedly has a good first touch and can put in a good set piece but defensively he can be worrying to watch as he continues to back off wingers. Some experience in that department again in a must.

Centre Half?

A centre half has been a must all season for the Alex. Poor defensive errors and injuries have left the reds looking worse in this area than any other on the pitch. Danny O`Donnell has proven himself to many fans to be first choice this season and he and Dennis Lawrence have looked a more steady partnership in recent weeks. Julian Baudet is defiantly a good player on his day, but seems to have lacked the leadership he showed in previous campaigns after being given the captain`s armband this time around. A new man at the back must be a leader and a man not afraid to make his point to colleagues on a Saturday afternoon.

Midfielder?

Experience is what is needed for a Crewe midfield, something that was always alongside the youth in the glory years but something that has been lacking of late. Michael O`Connor has been a man told to lead the line to youngsters James Bailey, Mark Carrington and Luke Murphy, but Occy himself would benefit from having some experience alongside him. Crewe had been linked with a move for Graham Kavanagh but he elected to join league one rivals Carlisle. It looks as if Thordasson may go back to his homeland for Gunnar Mar Gudmundsson who plays in the Icelandic top flight. He has an impressive scoring record and although it is hard to say could be the answer.

Maybe this week we`ll hear more on transfers for the Alex,as Thordason looks to add to his squad.

A commanding CB and experienced MC would sort us out for the time being. Think the hysteria surround Billy Jones is getting way out of hand, he isn’t that bad. Goalkeeping wise I don’t think it should be top priority as long as we can get a bloody coach for them, but if someone like Warner or Kiraly wants to come then hey sure (though I doubt they will).
