Relegation to League Two now looks a bleak certainty rather than a possibility for Crewe after another abject defeat at Cheltenham yesterday in what was billed a must win game.

The Alex now sit eleven points from safety and six point adrift from the nearest team in League One, their conquerors from yesterday, Cheltenham.

Interim manager Dario Gradi may have turned around the team`s fortunes in a confident 2-0 victory in the second round of the cup in mid week, but when it came to the biggest game of the season at Cheltenham, where a point was very much a minimum requirement, the players once again showed their lack of passion, desire and overall quality to prove that Crewe fully deserve their position at the foot of the League One table.

The club`s league position is a complete embarrassment and the clubs board and management should be ashamed they have let it come to this, especially as the club has a sound financial footing and some of the best training facilities in the country? that said, the players still have to shoulder a lot of the blame. Most of them may not have the ability to succeed at this level but their lack of effort and commitment in games, such as yesterday, where they needed to give 100% is so evident that many of the fans suggestions that most are not fit to where the shirt may be fully justified.

The search for a new manager continues, with David Platt reportedly turning down the job this week, though his previous poor management record meant that despite being an ex-player, the fans seemingly wouldn`t have been wholly impressed by this move anyway.

What 12 months ago would have been an attractive prospect to many managers with top level experience, with the club teetering on the edge of League Two oblivion and the future of the famed academy in question, attracting the right man to take the club forward is becoming increasingly difficult.

Some sort of consolidation is now needed at the club, soon the faint possibility of League One survival will be gone and the club will have to start preparing for life back in the football league`s basement, which when confirmed will be a dark day in the club`s history, considering what has been achieved since we were last there.

Gradi claims the club`s academy is still the future but with only us and Peterborough from League One currently still having academies, surely at a cost of over a million pounds a year to run, having an academy in League Two would be unsustainable, especially as the potential value of players coming through would be dramatically reduced. There would definitely be no incomes of 2 millions pounds or over for players like we received in League One for Luke Varney and Nicky Maynard.

A miracle is now needed, not only to save the club from relegation, but to get the club and its players back on an even keel. I don`t want to see a manger rushed into the club because of our worsening situation by any means but Dario`s heart is clearly not 100% behind the cause, the fact that he has said he will still be taking a prolonged holiday in January if he is still in charge or not shows that, but at the end of the day, who can blame him.

Times have become shockingly bleak at Gresty Road and a win at home against Swindon next Saturday is an absolute must to keep the clubs and fans extremely thin hopes of survival alive.

If the Alex keep hold of Dario until the end of the season, it definately will be curtains. There needs to be a new man with new ideas before the New Year, else there will be trouble.

I don’t however believe that League Two would be the death of the club, but it would spell a few years of doing very little whilst the academy builds up strength.

Let’s be honest the board dallied too long over the Holland decision which was a month too late, so what has changed to make us believe that they have finally opened their eyes to the predicament we find ourselves in. I foresee that Dario will be around through to end of January before an appointment is attempted, at which point no decent manager will touch us, and far to late to get in the signings we so desparately need – league two beckons and the club appears powerles to do what needs to be done to avoid what is rapidly becoming inevitable. Championship play off prospects to league two certainties in just three years – what a disgrace.
