Ryan Colclough responded to the call for an end product with both goals as Crewe Alexandra celebrated their first win of the season against ten-man Tranmere Rovers at Gresty Road.

The teenager struck towards the close of each half to leave a late John-Louis Akpa Akpro reply as not affecting the overall outcome.

Manager Steve Davis made a couple of changes and immediately witnessed an early corner from Andy Robinson finding the underside of the crossbar.

Matt Tootle sent a free-kick over in reply and Colclough was also wide before Chris Atkinson did likewise at the other end.

Rovers should really have taken the lead following a misjudgement from George Ray but Alan Martin managed to block from Akpa-Akpro, while Ash Taylor headed wide at the far post.

Danny Holmes then received the second of two yellow cards for catching Anthony Grant and was dismissed with still twelve minutes of the opening half remaining.

The visitors were soon made to pay as Byron Moore broke into the area and allowed Colclough to drill past former Alex keeper Owain fon Williams.

Tranmere’s Atkinson hoisted over after the break while another former Crewe man, Ryan Lowe, couldn’t find enough power to seriously trouble Martin.

Further decent work from Moore soon had goalscorer Colclough seeing another attempt turned aside by fon Williams, who then gathered from Max Clayton before the teenage substitute also struck an upright.

But after Akpa-Akpro forced another reaction from Martin, the home side extended their lead when Colclough proved decisive on the end of some good approach work involving Moore and Kelvin Mellor.

However, Colclough immediately lost possession and the visitors broke for Akpo Akpro to grab a late consolation – and then threatened an unlikely equaliser when soon volleying over.
