Middlesbrough have activated Ross Turnbull’s release clause in time for their UEFA Cup semi-final clash with Steaua Bucharest. First choice keeper Mark Schwarzer is ruled out for at least two weeks with a broken cheekbone following a clash with ex-Crewe striker Dean Ashton in yesterday’s FA Cup semi-final. Turnbull will be back-up for Australian keeper Brad Jones.

Turnbull’s recall is unlikely to disturb Crewe’s preparations for Sunday’s game against Millwall as Dario Gradi had already stated his desire to give back-up keeper Stuart Tomlinson a chance in goal. However, Turnbull’s return to Middlesbrough will see Owain fon Williams step up to the bench. Turnbull played 29 games on loan at Crewe, and recently stated that he has enjoyed his time at Crewe.
