Crewe have missed out on the signing of centre-back Jamie McCombe. After triggering a clause allowing McCombe to talk to both clubs, both clubs then had undisclosed bids believed to be around £90,000 accepted for the defender. Dario Gradi had met with McCombe to discuss personal terms, though after hearing of Bristol City’s interest, the 6’5 defender wanted to speak to Gary Johnson’s side.

McCombe said, ‘The move is a fantastic opportunity for me. City are a big club with bags of potential and I feel it is the right step for me at this stage of my career.’

McCombe’s move to Ashton Gate is a blow for Crewe, who are anxious to sign at least two centre-backs this summer. Having already been rejected by Gareth McAuley, and George Pilkington seemingly destined for bigger things, Crewe will have to turn their attention elsewhere for the elusive centre-backs.
