Local rivals Crewe Alexandra and Port Vale shared a scoreless draw on the opening day of the season.

Home goalkeeper Ben Garratt was largely responsible for that with a number of fine saves.

Former Alex winger Byron Moore struck over for the visitors while Louis Dodds finished weakly at Garratt.

Newcomer Ben Nugent then covered the threat of ex-Crewe loan striker Uche Ikpeazu, and Remie Streete headed a corner wide before Lauri Dalla Valle and Brad Inman were crowded out at the other end.

Near to the break, Garratt blocked well with his legs from Dodds and also kept out Sam Foley, with George Ray’s headed reply only finding keeper Jak Alnwick.

Vale’s Ikpeazu had an effort ruled out into the second-half before home substitute Ryan Colclough was twice wide of the mark.

However, Garratt was in action again to thwart Ikpeazu and then got behind substitute Enoch Andoh’s late volley before Moore threatened injury-time success.
