Nothing would please Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis more than a repeat outcome from their most recent visit to Oldham Athletic.

“We managed to dig deep, scrap and compete very well” – Steve Davis

Striker Mathias Pogba and centre-back Mark Ellis were both on target as the Railwaymen secured a 2-1 victory on a cold night in December at a typically unforgiving Boundary Park.

‘It’s almost definitely about application when you go to Oldham,” Davis told the Crewe Chronicle. “We did that last season when we got a result on a difficult night. It was raining as usual and windy and a horrible, horrible night.

“We managed to dig deep, scrap and compete very well, and if that’s what it takes to win that game then that’s what you have to do,” he continued. “Sometimes when the confidence isn’t high the pretty football just has to be put to one side. The basics, the hard work and the graft, have to become more apparent.”
