Manager Steve Davis was left applauding a scintillating opening half as Crewe Alexandra thrashed Hartlepool United 5-0 in the Capital One Cup first round.

“I’ve said all along the front four are going to be difficult to hold” – Steve Davis

The Alex scored four times before the break courtesy of strikers AJ Leitch-Smith, Max Clayton (2) and Mathias Pogba, who later added their fifth in added time.

“We played well first-half but didn’t do as well second-half but we kept going and kept a clean sheet,” Davis told the Crewe Chronicle. “I’ve said all along the front four are going to be difficult to hold. There is terrific movement there, they couldn’t hold them today.

“I am always looking for the perfect performance but the result is the most important thing,” he added. “We still have a lot of work to do and improvement to make on the training ground but I’ll take what we’ve done today.”
