Race Against Time

The transfer window will shut at midnight tonight, leaving Steve Holland less than 24 hours to get his targets.

And we all know what needs to happen today. Whilst Holland managed to bring in countless attacking players over the summer, the defence has been neglected… and it was never our strongest point.

Steve Collis has gone some way to helping stem the steady flow of opposition goals, but it’s still clear that the likes of Julien Baudet, Danny O’Donnell and Chris McCready are not up to the job of protecting Collis. Maybe with a little help, but last season saw us finish with the second worst goals against tally outside the relegation zone. We’re already trailing behind most this season.

A new centre back is Holland’s priority but we really do seem no nearer to getting one than at any other point this summer. We’ve seen countless trial defenders come and go – it just looks like this one ain’t going to happen.

The defence is not the only point of concentration today. A good point raised on the Vital Crewe board yesterday – what about the midfield? It’s average age on Saturday started at under 20 years old. Staggering.

It definitely needs an injection of some experience. Players like Schumacher and Bopp would surely be candidates for that but it looks as if Holland is looking for a new Neil Cox and sees that in Gary Breen, who doesn’t seem to want come.

It’s going to be an interesting day. Ideally a new defender and new midfielder will have arrived by midnight but I fear we’ll be stuck looking for loans in a week’s time. Again.

Tick tock tick tock. Come on Steve. We’re waiting.

here we go again, short-term loans to fill all the holes. Surely we have a decent enough scouting database of players to call upon if our first picks aren’t interested?
