Crewe look set to switch their attentions to Liverpool youngster Ray Putterill after learning that first choice target Lee Holmes is nowhere near match fit following a long-term lay off.

The club have been in the market for a left winger following the 300,000 departure of midfielder David Vaughan. They identified former England Under 19`s player Lee Holmes as the man to solve the problematic left wing position.

Issues with his wages and doubts over his fitness have convinced the management team to pursue other avenues. Putterill, 18, is described as a tricky left winger who has risen through the famous Liverpool academy at Melwood.

He was promoted to the senior squad this summer and was on target against Crewe in the summer friendly at the Alexandra Stadium. He is highly regarded by Liverpool and was an integral part of the Liverpool youth side that retained the FA Youth Cup in May.
