Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has told young defender Kelvin Mellor to ignore an approach from Derby County and instead continue his development at Gresty Road.

Despite only a handful of senior starts the 21-year-old is already a target of the talent scouts, with Derby the first to make a serious move as he continues to delay on agreeing to Alex’s offer of a new one-year deal.

The Rams have only just released centre-back Jason Shackell to Burnley for a fee of around £1.1m – but Mellor is understood to be just one of a number of potential targets. Should they pursue the young Alex defender, however, the Championship club would have to pay compensation or risk going to tribunal.

“Kelvin’s just broken into the first team in the last five or six weeks of the season, and although he did very, very well it’s still very early in his career,” Davis told This is Staffordshire. “Although he is a late starter and we’ve had to wait a long time for him, he’s been worth the wait. But now he’s got to be patient and prove himself in League One.”
