New goalkeeping coach Steve Phillips is ready to help understudy Alan Martin improve if he decides to re-sign for the club.

The 34-year-old is to combine his new role with continuing to be Alex’s number one next season after signing a two-year deal this week.

Manager Steve Davis has already insisted he wants to see ex-Leeds United keeper Martin, 23, significantly pushing his senior colleague, who admits he would welcome that challenge.

“Alan Martin is a very good goalkeeper and I think I can help him to improve,” Phillips told Alex’s official website. “As a player you want the challenge for your place. It keeps you on your toes and I have a really good relationship with Alan.”
