The club has surprised fans today with the news that goalkeeper Steve Phillips has signed a new contract that will keep him at Gresty Road till the end of next season.

Having become a bit of an outcast this season, losing his number one spot to loanee Rhys Taylor, all signs were pointing to a summer departure for Phillips. Making just one start this season, against Bradford in place of the suspended Taylor, Phillips last month admitted that he was seeking a loan move.

Taylor’s inclusion in the side over Phillips has been a bone of contention amongst fans, especially with the Chelsea loanee now shipping in 12 goals in his last three appearances for the club. However, Taylor looks likely to remain as Dario’s first choice between the sticks for the remainder of the season.

Phillips originally signed a permanent deal with the club back in the summer after spending the majority of last season on loan from Bristol Rovers. Originally thought to be a two year deal, it later transpired that the second year was dependent on Phillips’ fitness and availability throughout 2010/2011.

Today’s news that the 32 year old has agreed to remain at the club for another season is certainly welcome amongst fans and here’s hoping Phillips will be number one for Crewe Alexandra’s return to League One next season.
