Performance To Be Proud Of

The team finally gave a performance they can be proud of this season. Most wins this season have come from scrappy, hard fought and sometimes lucky circumstances but today was different.

The result never seemed in doubt and the only question was really how many we would score. In a way, two goals didn’t really do the performance justice, especially in the first half.

Quick, slick passing moves that we haven’t seen at Gresty Road in a couple of years saw Yeovil collapse on more than one occasion but a bit of bad luck and brilliant goalkeeping kept the likes of Simon Church and Ryan Lowe off the score sheet.

Lowe flashed one inches past the post. Billy Jones’ free kick cannoned off the bar… as did Simon Church’s rebound header. Church then made a solo effort that was tippedjust past the post by Mildenhall… and we weren’t even into the 20th minute! It was from the resulting corner though that the break through came, a Chris McCready header at the near post made sure it wasn’t going to be a frustrating day of missed chances.

Chances continued to stream our way but it took till 5 minutes from half time to double the score. Byron Moore scored his 2nd goal of the season when the ball fell to him inside the area. Unmarked and in acres of space, he line the ball up and put it in the back of the net, with the help of a deflection.

The second half was what you would expect. The team fell back a bit, less committed to the attack, whilst Yeovil tried to get back in it. They never really caused much trouble and the half fairly quickly passed them by.

Frustration continued for Steve Holland on the injury front. With Julien Baudet and Danny O’Donnell out injured, the centre back positions were already a bit weak so the news that George Abbey is out for Tuesday at Port Vale and Neil Cox is doubtful won’t be welcomed.

Abbey went off 20 minutes into the game suffering from a hamstring injury. Holland made the surprise move of bringing on right winger Elliott Bennett in his place. Bennett, on loan from Wolves, took his position up at right back whilst Danny Woodards moved to centre back.

Maybe it was a stroke of genius though as Danny Woodards went on to have a fantastic game, and by far my Man Of The Match.

Overall it was a great performance and three points. Injuries are mounting but something seems to be clicking in the team at the moment. Maybe too soon to put relegation fears behind us but we can definitely look to Tuesday at Vale confidently.
