Reports say that Crewe have joined the race to sign former Vale loanee Gareth Owen. The Stockport County defender has been told he has no future at the Hatters, with Owen hoping to secure a release from his County contract soon.

Having been on loan at Port Vale for December, the Valiants would appear to be front runners but previous interest from the Alex may be re-ignited.

Assistant manager Neil Baker told The Sentinel: ‘We did try to sign Gareth when he initially went to Vale. We didn’t receive any reason why he didn’t come, but perhaps it was because Port Vale were willing to offer him a longer deal.

‘He’s not been discussed, but it is not something we would rule out.’

Owen came through the ranks at Stoke City during Gudjon Thordarson’s final year at the Potters in 01/02.
