Port Vale defender Gareth Owen says he is flattered by the interest shown in him by Crewe but says he won’t make his mind up on his future till after the final game of the season next weekend.
Owen has been a long term target for Dario Gradi and with the 28 year old in the final weeks of his contract at Vale Park, Vale caretaker manager Mark Grew last week confirmed the Alex’s interest in his centre back.
It’s thought that whilst Vale have verbally offered Owen a two year extension, the Alex have at least matched the contract offer in order to bring him to Gresty Road this summer.
There were rumours abound that Owen had already agreed a deal with the Alex to join on a free transfer but, whilst that could still be a possibility, Owen told BBC Radio Stoke that nothing had yet been decided in regards to his future.
With Vale without a manager and protests against the Board of Directors continuing, Owen says he needs to see what the future holds for Port Vale before he commits to them.
“There’s a two-year contract waiting for me but I haven’t seen it in writing. There’s a couple of things that have gone on and I want to see what is happening on the managerial front.
“I can’t come out and say I’m definitely going to be here next year because I honestly don’t know.
“It’s not just me to think about, I’ve also got my family and I’ve got to make sure I’m still earning some money come next year. I don’t want to be in a position where I’m waiting and waiting and any offer outside of Port Vale goes away as well.
“I’ll make a decision what’s best for me, whether that’s with Crewe or whether that’s somewhere else.
“As a player you want to be wanted but it’s important to have a good dressing room that’s united and pushing in the right direction. You want to see a club that’s settled, a manager that’s settled and players that are settled.”
He certainly doesn’t sound too sure of his Vale future but is Owen on his way to Gresty Road? There’s certainly enough talk to suggest it could happen.
