Crewe have taken a non-league hot shot on trial after he impressed Chief Scout Neil Baker earlier this month.

Baker spotted Mark Jones of Deeping United as he took his Leek Town side, where he became Director of Football in the summer, past the Lincolnshire club in the FA Cup second qualifying round.

Bakes is of course known for his eye for talent in the lower leagues having previously played a part in bringing the likes of Steve Jones and Luke Varney to the club whilst he was Dario’s assistant-manager.

Jones has already netted 14 times for Deeping this season, albeit in the United Counties Premier (the ninth level of the league pyramid). The 22 year old striker will spend next week with the club in the hope of joining the likes of Antoni Sarcevic, Carl Martin and Jordan Connerton – three of the Alex’s current squad who were plucked from the depths of non-league.
