Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis won’t be rushed into off-loading young prospect Max Clayton.

“It isn’t a disaster because we still have him for another season” – Steve Davis

The teenager appears certain to turn down a new deal following further talks with his agent. It means Clayton could depart the club as early as August, unless the Railwaymen decide to risk a tribunal valuation next summer.

“It is probably clear that Max is not going to extend his contract,” Davis admitted to This is Cheshire. “It isn’t a disaster because we still have him for another season and we`re looking forward to working with him this summer.

“We have to get him playing well and scoring goals and then we’ll see what happens,” he continued. “He’s still our player and under contract in terms of compensation. There are various options open to us and we’ll decide what is best for us and him.”

England Under-19 international Clayton scored nine goals in 42 games for the Alex last season.
