Striker AJ Leitch-Smith will be asked to play through the pain barrier if he wants consideration for Crewe Alexandra’s opening game of the season this weekend.

The 22-year-old is back in training after missing the latest pre-season friendly against Tamworth with a broken little toe.

Alex entertain League One rivals Hartlepool United in the first round of the Capital One Cup this coming weekend.

“AJ has a broken toe and will have to play through the pain barrier,” manager Steve Davis told Crewe’s official website. “There is not a lot you can do about when it comes to that sort of injury and you just have to get on with it as much as you can.

“There is going to be a bit of pain and discomfort and it is just a question of him overcoming that and adjusting,” he added.
