Nevitt Goal Effectively Seals Play-Off Spot

Elliott Nevitt’s seventeenth goal of the season was enough for Crewe Alexandra to defeat Morecambe at the Crown Ground last night despite a late red card for on-loan Preston North End midfielder Lewis Leigh.

Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Accrington Stanley with Ryan Cooney replacing Aaron Rowe, who dropped down to the bench where he was joined by Joel Tabiner and Charlie Kirk who returned following knocks.

The game’s opening chance came in the 6th minute as Morecambe forward Charlie Brown fired over before Tom Booth would make a save from Senior’s free-kick 6 minutes later. Nevitt would have an effort saved 4 minutes before the break before the forward would set up Matus Holicek with the Slovakian midfielder having his shot saved by Archie Mair in the hosts’ goal.

Into the second half where a Leigh free-kick would be put over by stand-in skipper Mickey Demetriou before substitute Rowe would come on and create a chance for Holicek a minute after coming on, the youngster firing over the bar. The Alex would take the lead on 70 minutes as a weaving run from Zac Williams ended with the Welshman dragging his shot from the edge of the area into the path of Nevitt to score from 6 yards out before they were reduced to 10 men in the final minute of the ninety as Leigh would see his marching orders for a lunge just outside the hosts’ penalty area.

The next couple of games see the Alex hosting Grimsby Town on Saturday before hosting Wrexham the following Saturday.

Final Thoughts:

It’s good to see the side get a win after several games where things haven’t gone our way in front of goal with a good run from Williams to set up the goal, maybe with a slight deflection into the path of Nev.

One disappointment was the red card to Leigh which would see him miss the rest of the regular season but be available for the play-off games.
