Skipper Luke Murphy shook off a groin injury to lead Crewe Alexandra to victory over Southend United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley.

“I said beforehand that leading my hometown team out at Wembley would be my proudest moment” – Luke Murphy

The inspirational Murphy set them firmly on their way with a great strike on six minutes and Max Clayton added to it early in the second period.

“I said beforehand that leading my hometown team out at Wembley would be my proudest moment and to win the game and trophy is an unbelievable feeling,” Murphy told Crewe’s official website. “The lads were brilliant today because Southend put us under a lot of pressure.

“The back four and goalkeeper were outstanding,” he continued. “They dealt with everything and that clearance from Harry Davis was worth a goal in my eyes. It was an unbelievable clearance.”
